LOVES PARK — Pickleball players unite in Loves Park this weekend for the first of two tournaments hosted in the Rockford, Illinois region this year.
The first Spring Swing Open takes places Saturday and Sunday at Fusion Sports Center, 7135 Clinton Road, Loves Park. The Hot Slam third annual round robin tournament takes place Aug. 3-4 at Loves Park Playground, 5101 Louisa St., Loves Park.
Each is expected to draw about 100 people with an estimated economic impact of $16,200, according to the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“The non-traditional sports market is one area in which we continue to focus our efforts. We are excited to welcome pickleball players to the Rockford region and hope these tournaments bring greater awareness to this growing sport,” said John Groh, RACVB president and CEO.
Pickleball is played with wooden paddles and a perforated plastic ball that’s similar to a whiffle ball. The game is played on a badminton-sized court with a tennis net lower to 34 inches.
There are five pickleball courts in the region: Loves Park Playground, Sinnissippi Park, Nick Saelens Memorial Park in Durand, Club Fusion, Westlake Village and Indoor Sports Center at Sportscore Two.
